Just as the Omi­cron vari­ant of COVID-19 or coro­n­avirus began spread­ing, the Unit­ed States and oth­er West­ern gov­ern­ments imposed a trav­el ban on 8 South­ern African nations: South Africa, Botswana, Zim­bab­we, Namib­ia, Lesotho, Eswa­ti­ni, Mozam­bique, and Malawi.
